A short history of the church and priory at Goring-on-Thames

Garry Alder has completely revised the book on St Thomas’ church that was written by notable local historian Ethel Carleton Williams and first published in 1933 (price 6d!). Many changes to the church have taken place since the last edition of her work 30 years ago and more discoveries have been made about its history. Miss Williams’ account of the priory has been retained, but the rest of the text has been re-written. Much new material has been incorporated, particularly relating to the two significant modernisations of the building that took place in the 19th century, both of which were the subject of much controversy at the time. Improvements and renovations continued throughout the following years, culminating in the radical changes of 2008 which included the building of the Canterbury Room and the replacement of the old fixed pews with oak stackable seating. The 44-page full colour book is illustrated with photographs and new line drawing and includes plans of the priory and of the church at different periods.
